Executive function is a term used to describe a set of mental processes that help individuals plan, problem-solve, organize, and regulate their thoughts and actions in order to achieve goals. These processes are controlled by the prefrontal cortex of the brain and include skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and attentional control. Deficits in executive function can result in difficulties with attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and task completion. Research in this area aims to better understand the underlying mechanisms of executive function and develop interventions to support individuals with executive function deficits.
